The chart indicates a connection between the RTT score and theamount of contact the Ishkashimi people have with the Sanglechi speechvariety. The average score of subjects with contact level 1 is 44%, withcontact level 2 it is 61% and with contact level 3 it is 78%. Although aclear trend is seen, there were not enough level 3 testees to achieve arepresentative result for that level. It should be noted that other factorssuch as aptitude and the level of testees concentration during the test willhave affected the result to some degree.

Figure 5 presents the result of the Recorded Text Testingconducted in Sanglech. The red dots represent female respondents, the bluedots male respondents. The results are presented according to the amount oflanguage contact the subject had had with Ishkashimi.

As the chart shows, there is some connection between contact withSanglechi and the RTT score. But this connection is not as clear as one wouldexpect. The average score of the 11 subjects with contact level 1 is 54%, ofthe 12 people with contact level 2 it is 80% as well and of the 6 subjectswith contact level 3 it is 80% as well. The different scores of subject withapproximately the same level of contact very likely depend on other factors,like concentration or distraction during the test.

We found no gender-related pattern in the RTT scores besides thefact that women have less contact with the other group. Also, on the whole people from all the Ishkashimi villages haveequal contact with Sanglechi people and vice versa. This is not surprising,as some Ishkashimi travel all the way through the Sanglech valley to Pakistanand Sanglechi from the whole valley go to Ishkashim to buy supplies and toreceive medical treatment.

It is striking to see the difference in the result of theIshkashimi RTT compared to the Sanglechi RTT. While the Ishkashimi scored anaverage of 54%, the Sanglechi scored an average of 71%. Taking the average ofsubjects with contact level 1 the difference is less: the Ishkashimi scored44%, and the Sanglechi scored 54%. The main reason seems to be the attitudepeople hold towards the other speech variety: The Ishkashimi look down on theSanglechi and view their language as inferior to their own language. Theyconsider Sanglechi to be a very rural language and they frequently commentedthat Ishkashimi is a more beautiful language. When one Ishkashimi was askedwhether he considered the storyteller to use good language, he responded thatthe language was good for the storyteller himself. The Ishkashimi say thatSanglechi is very different from their language; they mentioned grammar,vocabulary and pronunciation to be different. However, the people fromSanglech consider Ishkashimi to be a good language. Every RTT subjectcommented positively about the language the story teller used. They considerit to be a "good", "very good" or "sweet"language. Only one man said that the language in Sanglech is better. In linewith that the Sanglechi consider Ishkashimi only to be a little differentfrom their own language. Some did say it is not different. One man said it is"our language".
